2nd Grade Music:
NOVEMBER:
We've learned another guessing game this month called, "Chugga Lugga." Songs like these give me an opportunity to hear each student sing a phrase of the song in solo. I can easily work with a student to develop their voice within the "game."
"Thanksgiving Day Is Coming" has provided an opportunity for the 2nd graders to work on the skill of rhythmic decoding. The children are presented with a pattern on a neutral syllable then they must apply rhythm syllables to the pattern (du, du-day). This is a readiness for music reading and writing!

OCTOBER:
Our second grade musicians are learning so much! We learned a new greeting song from Ms. Miller called, "Hello Neighbor." This is a fun guessing game where the children are given an opportunity to respond in solo while their classmates guess who the singer was. We learn quickly that "silly" voices are easy to spot, but our awesome singing voices can sometimes trick our friends. 2nd Graders are also loving a song called, "The Owl and the Pumpkin." This song gives the students a chance again to sing in solo as part of the song. The kids LOVE listening to each other play the characters.
Rhythmically, our second graders are reviewing some first grade concepts like writing quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rests. We are adding sixteenth notes, half notes, and half rests to our speaking vocabulary. The second graders have also had the chance to play several instruments so far this year. Xylophones are always the favorite. :)
