5th Grade:
NOVEMBER:
We extended our harmony unit to include the "12-bar blues." Students learned this musical form, and heard several examples of songs that fit into it, such as "St. Louis Blues," "Hound Dog," and the theme from "Batman." That was a hit!
The 5th Graders are also getting back into recorder! This year we will be doing "Recorder Karate." Students are able to work at their own pace to learn songs and test for belts. Each song gets a little harder and a new skill is learned. Many students have already tested for their white belt. All the recorder karate songs can be found under the "recorder" tab.
Rhythmically, students have been practicing their ability to "decode." This means, I play or chant a pattern that the student then applies syllables to. This may be one of my favorite things to hear the kids do. It's like learning a new language. :) This skill is a readiness to read and write patterns later in the year.

OCTOBER:
5th Graders have been working with Ms. Miller this month to develop their singing voices. They have learned about posture, breathing, relaxing their jaw, and releasing tension. It has been AMAZING to hear the changes in their vocal quality in just a couple months. Wow!
We are also working through a unit on harmony. The 5th graders have learned several songs (Morning Has Broken, Addams Family to name a couple), that we have been able to add a bass line to.
Rhythmically, students are echoing more difficult patterns with syllables. We are learning "dotted" rhythms this year. By the end of the year, your student will be able to read and write dotted half notes and dotted quarter--eighth note combinations with confidence.
